Glenn Hughes Interview

glennhughesA very interesting interview on this week’s GTFM Rock Show with Andy Fox digging in his archives and brushing down a short chat with Deep Purple MkIII & IV bass player/singer GLENN HUGHES.

With the 35th Anniversary reissue of  “Stormbringer” hitting the shelves this short but revealing piece finds Hughes in particularly forthright mood whilst talking about his stint in the UK heavy rock legends, with Ian Gillan, David Coverdale and Ritchie Blackmore all subject to his  comment at some point during the interview.

Very interesting to hear G H, don’t often hear his side of the story.

  2. I know next to nothing about Deep Purple Band Politics… I will probably spend the day looking for Deep Purple music – I haven’t heard them in ages – Thanks for that!

  3. Sure, he may have had a successful band before joining Purple, but if they had got Paul Rodgers, who would want to hear Glenn sing when you got Paul. Come on. Glenn’s singing on the studio albums was ok at best. Live, his singing was dreadful. Listen to the Final Mk3 concert live cd, he goes off on some horrible warbling/screaming crap. With his ego that wanted to sing 50% in the MK3 lineup and his funk influence, no wonder Ritchie wanted to leave. Purple would wave been better off with just Coverdale singing and Glover still on bass.

How did Andy Fox fit in the same room with Glenns head?
Eric is spot on about the Final mk3 concert cd.When Glenn goes into his”soul”vocalizations,i can’t find the skip button fast enough.

  5. What??? Technically, Glenn Hughes is definitely the best singer Deep Purple ever had. I can understand when a Deep Purple fan does not like the style of music he prefers, but be fair to the guy! Plus: He can still hit all the high notes he used to sing in the 70s while Gillan and Coverdale cannot get their act together at all nowadays. Ask Gillan to sing ‘Child in Time’ for example…

  6. Always thought it took two vocalists ( Coverdale & Hughes) to replace Gillan.
Hughes is the better vocalist – but cocaine will turn you into a screeching off key banshee.

Go to youtube and type in “Glen Hughes Mistreated Russia 2004″

even though its the end of the song – He’s brilliant.

and I’m a Paul Rodgers fan.

  7. Deep Purple for the real fan, doesn’t really consider Glen as “so awsome’
but only a very talented business fill in.

  8. Guys………..

Glenn baby is an aresehole!!! Yes, great studio albums, the odd good gig but he was part of the nail in DP’s coffin, without a shadow of doubt. I totally agree that Glover should have stayed.

I met Glenn at a gig a while back.. My band was playing at it too.. I wasnt at all phased at meeting him… he goes to the toilet and stuff like the rest of us……. He did a blinding set, just him and a keyboard player…….

But I tell you what…………….. what an arrogant, up his own arse human being he is………. with the social skills of a complete idiot…. What kind of arsehole would blow his nose all up a dressing room wall??….. not just that but my clothes were on a bag right underneath!!! I was bloody livid!!!

If he were to take his sunglasses off for long enough, he might realise that he is no legend and the world does not revolve around Glenn Hughes…
