Thunder split – Luke Morley speaks

Where other sites bring you merely the press release on venerable UK rockers Thunderlukemorley announcing their (latest) split, thanks to our tie up with the GTFM Rock Show we are able to actually hear it from the horses’ mouth so to speak… well from the mouth of songwriter and guitarist Luke Morley anyway!

Broadcast on last Wednesday’s Rock Show, Luke explains the reasons behind the decision but also adds some hints at what might happen next for him personally, with a follow up to “El Gringo Retro” surely a possibility?

Is this really the end for Thunder… maybe not… but you’ll have CLICK HERE AND LISTEN to find out why.

From a personal point of view, whilst it is somehow disappointing to see a band I’ve followed since before the début album in 1989 and have seen about 30 times live in concert call it a day, I have to say I wasn’t really surprised.  I wasn’t all that taken with the latest album “Bang!” you may remember, feeling it was a little formulaic and that with some of the tongue-in-cheek songs especially they were going through the motions a little.  Listening to Luke Morley’s brief interview on the ROCK SHOW, I’m actually looking forward to hearing what he especially will do next.  I’m hoping for an album of songs closer to those found on “The Joy Of Six” EP.  More mature, possibly more reflective numbers that allow him to express his thoughts in a way that perhaps Thunder, and the expectations of their sound, wouldn’t allow.

Do I think it’s the last we’ve heard of Thunder?  Well certainly not in this house with the album, imports and various live shows I have on the shelves.  I’ve also got a funny feeling they’ll be playing live again at some point in the future too… but album-wise… I do think this could be it.  So thanks Thunder for some great memories (blowing Aerosmith off stage at the N.E.C. way back when, that Milton Keynes gig on the first “proper” tour,  Donington 90… and 92!, the final night of the “Backstreet Symphony part II” tour at Leicester De Montford Hall,  more recently a superb Rock And Blues show at Pentrich, the Chepstow Castle gig etc) and some fine, fine songs over the past twenty years.

  1. I actually understand the need to walk new paths. It could be quite creatively diminishing to be in a nothing new situation for so many years.

  2. Sad to see them go but Bowes & Morely will doubltess produce some fine music once they are released from the confines of the Thunder sound. Having followed these two since their Terraplane days I await the new msuic with eager anticipation!
