Iron Maiden at Twickenham

Sometimes, just being there is enough! Iron Maiden playing a huge stadium show in their home country as part of a tour that celebrates their 1980s output; a series of albums that even now mean so much to me personally that I couldn’t fail to be delighted by Saturday’s show. A fantastic reaction and superb atmosphere generated by a crowd that consisted of followers from the earliest days of the band to kids witnessing the live spectacle for the first time, and a middle tier, dead centre seat for me meant a perfect view of the light show, stage set and the bouncing mass assembled at pitch level.

Some thoughts on the songs though? Stunning is the only word I can use to describe “Rime Of The Ancient Mariner“. Returning to the set after too long an absence the lighting rig descending to merge with the backdrop and resemble the rigging of a ship as the band played out the haunting middle section was just part of the reason it was one of the nights great memories. A song expertly delivered though-out from the stage, after a thoughtful introduction by Bruce that included the well known words he used on “Live After Death” too, it proved itself a guitar dominated feast that demonstrated why it remains Maiden’s best epic.

Fear Of The Dark” too proved memorable.  Not actually from the era the tour has set about delivering but still a song that brought home just how big the crowd was and how powerful that magnitude of voices could be when audience participation was ordered! Both “Heaven Can Wait” and “The Clairvoyant” stick in my mind as well as I record my thoughts on the gig for the very same reasons.  The roar of approval when Eddie appeared on stage in “Somewhere In Time” mode during the latter song was perhaps only bettered when the backdrop opened to reveal Eddie “the mummy” during “Iron Maiden” itself, earlier in the evening.

Sure there were a few sound glitches.  We seemed to lose the guitars (all bloody three of ‘em) for a time during “Wasted Years“, Bruce’s mic appeared to cut-out a couple of times early on too although not for long.  A swirling wind that would have given the wonder-foot of English Rugby Union golden boy Johnny Wilkinson problems at the home of the sport took a while to be tamed although from “Rime” onwards I can’t recall the occasional drifting effect of the sound being anything like as noticeable as early on.

The highlight though… the memory of the gig I hope to keep for a long time is “Moonchild“, without a doubt.  Twenty years ago, as Iron Maiden recorded the “Maiden England” video at Birmingham’s NEC Arena, I witnessed the band live for the first time.  This song, also the opener of my favourite Maiden album “Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son” kicked off what was such a monumental occasion for me.  Now, finally restored to the set as the first song of the encore and complete with the acoustic introduction it made the highlight of the set that I hoped it would.

Overall? Just a hugely enjoyable experience throughout.  Great seats; in fact it was a fantastic view, superb atmosphere and a great day out by the river beforehand meeting friends old and new. Iron Maiden don’t get the mainstream media acclaim they deserve in this country but once again they prove just how popular they actually are.  Long may they continue.

Set List :- Aces High / Two Minutes To Midnight / Revelation / The Trooper / Wasted Years / The Number Of The Beast / Can I Play With Madness / Rime Of The Ancient Mariner / Powerslave / Heaven Can Wait / Run To The Hills / Fear Of The Dark / Iron Maiden / Moonchild / The Clairvoyant / Hallowed Be Thy Name

  1. Have to agree was a most impressive night !!. And when I went to watch them do most of these in the 80’s, never thought I be taking my 17y/o daughter with to see such an epic set 20 odd years later. But at least She has seen how a real show should look.. not some of the dross they watch these days (Nooo.. now I sound like me Dad).

Part that made me smile.. the fact most of the crowd sang all of the words to Doctor Doctor .. and Did the whole of Churchill’s speech !!. Before singing most of all the words to all of the songs.. Bruce could have stopped at any point and the crowd would have carried on anyway.. lol

I dont know what the locals at Twickenham must have thought was going on.. but you can be sure the Bon Jovi concerts or a Six nations match were not half as loud !

  2. It sounds incredible!!!! Thanks for a great review….

I WAS THERE AND CAN SAFELY SAY THAT THEY WERE AS AWESOME AS EVER, MAKES ME PROUD TO BE ENGLISH TO HAVE THE BEST BAND EVER INFRONT OF THIER HOME FANS KICKING ASS, HOW MANY OF TODAYS BANDS CAN SAY IN 30 YEARS TIME THAT THEY WILL SELL OUT A 55,000 ARENA ON THIER OWN AND BE EVEN BETTER THAN THEY WAS WHEN THEY FIRST STARTED. CANT WAIT FOR THE NEW ALBUM THAT BRUCE MENTIONED AND DEFFO THE TOUR FOR IT.

    UP THE IRONS!!!!!!!!!!

  6. I was somewhat 8-10 rows back from the Cyborg Somewhere In Time Eddie Banner, pitch standing of course.

Was the best gig I’ve EVER been to, and probably will remain that way! First Maiden gig i’ve been to as I’m one of the younger fans being 19 but it won’t be my last Maiden gig for sure!

The stage pyro’s and props we’re simply magic and stunning and ofc Maiden theirselves and their music were god-like!

My voice had left me by the end of it all… UP THE IRONS!!!

Fantastic review! I was at the Stockholm gig this week and it was phenomenal.

I am 33 and Iron Maiden were a big part of my teenage years. This was the first time I have seen them live and I wasnt let down. The set list, the lights, the stage, the energy absolutely fantastic!

Bruces’ vocal range is incredible when you hear him live. He even told the audience he had had some flu bug over the weekend (the gig was Weds) so amazing testament to the guys character that he was able to perform.

What I particularly liked was the fact a) they havent forgotten their roots and treat their fans with respect and b) the young kid sat next to me who played imaginary drums all the way through the set. Fantastic to see Maiden inspiring youngters as well as making us oldies feel young again!

I loved the fact they flew the Union Jack at the Stockholm Stadium out of respect to the band. Cant fault it!

Awesome show. Could not find anyone to go with me, but still bought tickets and made my way to london for the first time. was not 100% whether i would be able to find it, but just followed the floods of maiden T-Shirts. Phenominal atmostphere. Good to see Within Tempation to. Exhausted by the end of it, still found energy at the end of it to run towards the train station along with hundreds of other fans. Missed my cousins wedding for it lol. Coach journey home was actually fun to with everyone being Iron Maiden fans. Then 6mile walk home when I got back into birmingham at 03.30 and a nice smoke when I got home before crashing :-P
