Confessions Of A Vinyl Collector

Another couple of weeks and a few more records to add to the shelves.

I finally picked up a copy of Diamond Head’s Borrowed Time album from eBay. I don’t think this is original as it’s not the gatefold sleeve edition but plays perfectly and features a superb Rodney Matthews designed sleeve which looks great in 12″ glory.

Back to my favourite shop for the rest of this edition’s buys. Moving to Wales has been on the whole a superb experience helped in no little part by the fact Discovery Bookstore in the next village, Glanaman, has a huge selection of second hand vinyl with it’s own rock and metal section. I know I can go down there with a few quid and always pick up something of interest.

Having recently reviewed the cd Prodigal Songs for the Classic Rock Newswire, a release by the superb Majestic Rock reissue label, I was pleased to find the first two Heavy Pettin’ albums going cheap. Melodic nwobhm in style, the first album Lettin’ Loose cost just £1.25 whilst second release Rock Ain’t Dead set me back £3.

Living in Wales it’s only right that I check out their rock legends sometimes. As people down here do not part with their Man releases - you wouldn’t believe how much affection they have for that band - I ended up getting the rather fine Budgie release In For The Kill instead. A 1974 original in laminated sleeve it features the superb Crash Course In Brain Surgery it set me back a whopping £5. And no comments about this going ‘cheap’ as most Budgie’s do!

I’m on a bit of a nwobhm crusade at the moment and this again was evident by selecting the Tygers Of Pan Tang 1980 release Wild Cat. A contender for worst album cover ever award that cost just £3.

And finally, conscious of the fact I’ve so far failed to get any U.F.O. on vinyl I took a lucky dip through their section and pulled out Obsession. I reckon I’ve come up trumps with this one, opening track Only You Can Rock Me is of course a rock classic and the excellent condition of both vinyl and sleeve make this original a steal at £3.50.

So that’s six more to the vinyl collection and six more contenders for review on Rock Of Ages.

Now, that’s a great haul, Bill. BUDGIE, HEAVY PETTIN, and DIAMOND HEAD? Mucho great musico there, amigo!

Sounds like a good score. It seems like you get better deals on the ebay vinyl over there.

eBay can be a bit hit and miss bob, fortuantely I’ve found 4 or 5 reasonably local second hand vinyl sellers in South Wales who seem to smile a lot when I walk in fervently ringing home to tell their partners they’ll be eating out tonight!! Unfortunately one of my sources of new vinyl closed recently. Where do you purchase your vinyl from? Online or a local seller?

markm - I’m on a bit of a nwobhm thing at the moment! And Budgie must be something in the water…!!!
