Nice touch this month for subscribers to UK monthly music bible Classic Rock in the shape of a promo for Canadian band The Trews and their second album release Den Of Thieves. Now one of their tracks, the country tinged Poor Ol’ Broken Hearted Me had caught my attention on the ‘New Band Sampler’ cover disc a couple of issues back so I was keen to check this out.
First thing you notice is the credit to Jack Douglas as producer. Now he’s a serious name in the production world having worked with top performers like John Lennon, Cheap Trick and of course Aerosmith so for an unknown band like this to get him to produce them they must have something special.
First track So She’s Leaving does indeed display some Aerosmith leanings but the main impression here is a modern fresh sounding classic rock band mixing the sound of The Black Crowes with the vocal harmonies of The Beatles. Tired of Waiting displays some funk leanings whilst Montebello Road gives away those Beatle influences. The final track Got Myself To Blame is a fine chunk of bluesy rock swagger. Obviously accomplished musos (a rake of instruments on the album include melodica, banjo, lap steel and harmonium in addition to the obvious guitar, bass, keys and drums) the tracks showcased here, of which 1 & 4 are due to appear on the album display a band who still have a chance of success some eight years after their first EP release.
More Trews tracks are available from their myspace site whilst their home page has nine videos and an unissued track allowing you to check them out fully before buying.
Summary : Promising promo displaying a band with considerable talent. Crisp, polished production and well worth investing the time to check ‘em out. The album is already available in the US and Japan I think with a Europe and UK release due in April.
